As someone who is a new apprentice in a machine shop I wanted to have my own copy to refer to now and going well into my career. This book is great and I was able to buy this one used from a library via Amazon for about $50. I debated whether or not to buy a "large print" version but am happy enough with this one. I also like the fact that the spine is not firmly attached - in other words it is loose enough that it will allow you to open the book and see all the way to the center of the page without feeling like you have to hold it pried open with two hands. As for page thickness, I compare it to a bible - there is tons of information to fit in and unless you want a book 8" thick there has to be some sacrifice. If you're a home machinist, I would say that between the internet, local library, and other free resources you probably would not need this book unless you are planning on pumping out the projects.
